What is a phrasal verb?

A phrasal verb is a combination of a verb and one or two particles (prepositions or adverbs) whose combined meaning is often different from the individual words. They are extremely common in everyday English — especially in spoken and informal registers.

Intransitive
No object — "She gave up."
Transitive separable
"Turn the TV off." / "Turn off the TV."
Transitive inseparable
"Look after the children." — particle cannot split
